Premarital Conversations

Do not just prepare for the wedding. Prepare for the marriage.

Premarital Conversations create space for couples to talk honestly about the things that will shape the life they are preparing to build together.

Why it matters

Love is the beginning. Understanding is the work.

You may already know that you love each other. The more useful question is whether you understand how you intend to build a life together. Couples rarely struggle because they care too little. They struggle because they never quite talked about the things that quietly shape a marriage: money, family, expectations, faith, roles, rhythm and direction.

These conversations are calm, structured and honest. They are not about testing your relationship or predicting problems. They are about beginning your marriage with a shared understanding, and with the habit of talking well already in place.

What we explore

The themes that shape a life together

Your stories

Family backgrounds, values, faith and the expectations each of you brings, often without noticing.

How you relate

Communication, conflict, emotional needs, friendship and intimacy.

The life you are building

Money, work and ambition, children and parenting, roles, home and lifestyle, and extended family.

Your shared vision

Boundaries, decision making, personality differences and the direction you want your marriage to take.

The programme

Premarital Foundations

A guided set of four conversations. Each one builds on the last, moving from where you have come from to where you are going.

Session one

Our stories

Family background, values, expectations and identity. Where each of you comes from, and what you carry into the marriage.

Session two

How we relate

Communication, conflict, emotional needs, friendship and intimacy. How you connect, and how you repair.

Session three

The life we are building

Money, work, children, roles, extended family and boundaries. The practical shape of daily life together.

Session four

Our marriage vision

Shared values, decision making, growth, home culture and future direction. The marriage you are choosing to build.

A companion workbook to accompany Premarital Foundations is in preparation and will be offered here.

Honest and clear

What Premarital Conversations are

This is premarital education, relationship development and facilitated conversation. It is led by a researcher and people professional, not a clinician. It offers structure, perspective and honest discussion, and it works alongside, not in place of, any faith based preparation, counselling or professional support you may also choose.

What this is

  • Thoughtful, confidential conversation and facilitation
  • Perspective, honest questions and structured reflection
  • Mentoring, relationship education and practical thinking
  • A calm, private space to work things through

What this is not

  • Therapy, counselling or psychotherapy
  • Medical, psychological or crisis support
  • Legal or financial advice
  • Diagnosis or treatment of any condition
Preparing well matters. If either of you would benefit from specialist support at any point, I will say so and help you find it. If you are in distress or need urgent help, please contact your GP, NHS 111, the Samaritans on 116 123, or, in an emergency, 999.

Begin the marriage well
